Groundwater Remediation - Indianapolis, IN


EFS was contracted to perform groundwater remediation activities at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. The project was performed under US Navy Remedial Action Contract (RAC) No. N62467-98-D-0095, Task Order 004. The Naval Air Warfare Center was undergoing closure activities in accordance with the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) activities for the site.

The scope of services provided by EFS included:

  • Installation of groundwater monitoring wells utilizing a hollow stem auger drill rigs from EFS, including one well installed inside Building 1000 at the site
  • Baseline and quarterly low-flow groundwater sampling at all monitoring wells within AOCs 2, 4, 10 and 16 and the IR site (24 total)
  • Included five monitoring wells inside Building 1000
  • Injection of HRC and ORC material at 144 locations at depths ranging from 13 to 29 feet below grade, including 10 borings located inside Building 1000 requiring extensive protection of Navy property and personnel
  • On-site management of all project-derived waste including 65 drums of soil cuttings and 20 drums of decontamination and monitoring well purge water
  • Decontamination of all equipment coming into contact with potentially contaminated media
  • Restoring the site to original conditions

EFS provided Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 40-hour HAZWOPER-trained personnel and EFS owned direct push rigs and pumps to accomplish the scope of work. All work activities were performed in accordance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), US Navy and local regulations. The project was performed ahead of schedule and under budget within a three week period.
